Cheers! Summer Sangria Recipe

1

Summer sangriaWhether you’re celebrating an occasion or just enjoying some time at the pool, sangria is a perfect summer addition. Here’s a sweet recipe to keep you cheers-ing all summer long.

Ingredients:

1.5 L red wine (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, etc.) Try using a combination of wines around the $10 mark. Using a combination will give you different flavors.

1 cup superfine sugar (called baker’s sugar)

3-4 oz plain brandy

3-4 oz Grand Marnier

16 oz jar of Maraschino cherries, save cherry juice on side (buy the jar without stems!)

2 large oranges, sliced thinly

2 large apples, sliced thinly

7-Up

Mixing instructions:

Mix these altogether (except 7-Up) in a large container, stir, and let sit for 18-24 hours. Adding the cherry juice will make a more cherry/syrupy flavored sangria, so maybe add a little and then adjust to taste.

When you are ready to drink it, stir it up again; it should be fairly strong and fairly sweet, almost syrupy. Then, cut the mixture with 7-Up until it seems to have a thinner, more wine-like consistency.

Serve over ice and with wedges of fresh orange and/or apple.

It’s easy to make ahead ~ the flavors begin to meld over time. Consider doubling the recipe if needed. Keep it refrigerated, and it will last for months!
