How to tell if you are raising an Arizona kid| Five Fun Examples

Witnessing my own children grow up here in Phoenix is quite different from my experiences growing up in the Midwest. My kids will never feel the chill of waiting for the school bus in -10 degree temperatures or praying for a snow day, every single day, November through March. They will never have to deal with keeping track of gloves, scarves, boots, hats, and earmuffs.

I could go on and on about all the perils of growing up in the Midwest, and I know there are other Arizona moms reading this who have the same memories from their childhood. The truth is, our children are going to have a very different childhood than we did.

Here are five funny examples of how you can tell if you too are raising an Arizona child:

1)      The temperature drops to 72 degrees and everyone complains that they need a jacket.

2)      It rains. A completely normal event, yet they act like it is the most amazing thing that has ever happened…every single time.

3)      Every local kid knows how to hunt and kill scorpions in their backyard– not exactly a skill you learn on the Eastern Seaboard.

4)      When they do get to see snow, they can’t help but eat it…nonstop.

5)      They can name several different types of cacti, but they only know an evergreen tree as a Christmas tree.

Our kids may never be able to handle a true Midwestern or East Coast winter, but they will be experts at dealing with our hot, Phoenix summers. And that has got to count for something!
