The Give and Take of Motherhood

2

I think you have to be very naïve to go into motherhood thinking it will be all sunshine and roses all the time. However, even though most of us go into it knowing there will be challenges, I think sometimes we are often caught off guard by some of the yucky moments. I’m here to say- I will gladly take those tough moments because it makes the precious ones that much more memorable!

Sunday night, I got to experience the thing that most parents dread… the barfing toddler. There was the cry in the middle of the night, the ‘Mommy help me, help me’ immediately followed by me holding my trembling little boy as he puked all over his bed. My husband bathed him while I dealt with the damage that had been done in his room. I changed his bedding, tossed a load into the washing machine, and then snuggled up with my sick little boy gently running my fingers through his hair as he fell asleep. I finally got myself back to bed (after being summoned by the little princess who needed to eat) and then 2 hours later we had to repeat the whole process over again.

In the midst of it all I was tired, grossed out, and overall irritated that I had to clean it all up. But as I lay down in bed with my little boy trying to sooth him to sleep he rolled over wrapped his little clammy arms around me and said, ‘I love you Mommy, thanks for helping my barf.’ I cried and soaked up the moment knowing full well that he would feel better in the morning and his need for Mommy snuggles would have subsided.

I know that often times as mothers the icky things we have to put up with are not rewarded as we might like them to be (or as we desrve for them to be), but my goodness when they are- it is oh so sweet.

Do you have a story of a time that you had to deal with motherhood’s many unglamorous moments, only to be shown just how appreciated you were? I’d LOVE to hear it! Share YOUR story below!!

  1. Great post, Jess. I always kind of feel like we rise to our highest level of capability during these moments. You don’t realize what you’re capable of handling until you’re in the middle of it, and afterward you feel like you earned another stripe on your motherhood uniform. 🙂 Hope your little one is feeling better – we have had a rather pukey summer already, too. I feel your pain…
