On June 17th, 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States – after being celebrated in some communities for many years. What is Juneteenth, you ask?
Juneteenth is the celebration commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, outlawing slavery in states that were fighting to secede from the nation. While news traveled to many states (immediately freeing those in bondage), information regarding this did not reach some more remote states. On June 19th,1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, news finally reached Galveston, in the last state to receive the news, Texas. This news was met with jubilant celebrations. From there, Juneteenth was celebrated in many communities with the gathering of families, food, and fellowship. Celebrations continued to grow over the years, with some of the largest celebrations taking place in Galveston, Texas. This year, there are several ways to celebrate Juneteenth around the Valley, including these public events:
