Half way through the year! It’s true what they say, “The days are long but the weeks, months, & years are short.” And this year just seems to be flying right on by. June kicks off the summer vacation schedule for families in Scottsdale. Sure, we might be able to get away for a week or two this summer, but if you need some family friendly ideas for what to do this month, read on, mama! Scottsdale Moms Blog has some ideas for you to keep those kids entertained.
McCormick Stillman Railroad Park’s Concert Series – Sundays from April 30. Enjoy a variety of local bands from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sundays at the park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks, or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids younger than 2 riding free with a paying adult. Western Wednesdays at Scottsdale’s Museum of the West – Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West invites families to beat the heat this June with a series of four different “Western Wednesday” events! Each Western Wednesday will include fun, hands-on activities for kids ages 6 through 14, where they will learn about cowboys/cowgirls, animals of the West, Native American crafts, life in a covered wagon, and outlaws and lawmen! Cost per person for adults and children ages 6 and older is $5. Children 5 and under are free. Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to join in the fun! Summer Concert Series at Kierland Commons – Saturdays, June 3 & 10 7pm – 9pm. The final two weeks of this series for the season. Bring the family, a lawn chair and arrive early. June 3 enjoy the Retro 80’s band, Rock Lobster. On June 10 it’s Chucky E Baby jamming out your favorite classic rock tunes. For more details, visit Kierland Commons website.
Mighty Mud Mania – Saturday, June 10, 7:30am – 1pm at Chaparral Park. Mighty Mud Mania offers muddy obstacles for people of all ages and ability levels. There’s even non-muddy activities for those who prefer not to get dirty! The event includes the Original Mud course, Mini Mud, Muddy Tot, Mudville, Extreme course, and Inflatable Slide Arena. The event is FREE to attend and all courses are free for anyone 0 – 17. Save some time and get muddy quicker with the new child pre-registration process. Register your children for the event now and head over to one of 3 pickup locations from May 22nd to June 9th to grab your event wristbands. Scottsdale Public Library – Various activities offered all month long. Visit the here to find a variety of interactive, family friendly events for kids of all ages at all the library locations throughout Scottsdale.
Farmer’s Markets – The Old Town Scottsdale Farmer’s Market located at Brown & 1st Ave is a great one to check out. It’s open on Saturdays from 8am-1pm until the end of June and features local growers and specialty food producers. Be ready to find a wide variety of organic, and pesticide free produce, seasonal specialties such as cider and apples, flowers, natural pork, beef, fish, and free range eggs, and local cheeses, freshly baked artisan breads, Amish friendship breads, jams, and tamales are just some of the great local foods you’ll find. Summer Camp with City of Scottsdale – Scottsdale parks and recreation camps are available for those in first through eighth grades. Kids will participate in sports, fitness competitions, science experiments, craft projects, arts, special events, excursions and more. Visit here for all the camps available to choose from.
The Ocean Yoga Adventure – Desert Song Healing Arts Center, June 12-16, 8:30am – 11:30am, ages 5-10. The ocean is one of the most amazing places on earth. It is bursting with wild life and filled with mysteries aching to be solved. “Flowing with the tide of life” will be among the week’s topics as we learn about what swims, flies, slithers and crawls in the vast oceans of the world. Each child will create a mixed-media work of art of his or her favorite ocean creature. These will be displayed at the studio following the camp. See here for more details. Backyard Games Day – June 17, 10am – 8pm at West World. Get a jump start and celebrate Dad a day early! At this event, you can joy a number of family-friendly games in this 120,000 sq/ft indoor facility. There will backyard games, inflatables, a kids’ zone, vendors, dog adoptions, and the capstone event – the 2017 Arizona State Cornhole Championships. Father’s Day – Sunday, June 18. The day to celebrate and honor those incredible dads and all the dad-like figures in our lives. New dads, old dads, granddads, dads-in-law, stepdads, serious dads, goofball dads…There must be a million fatherly types out there, and without a doubt, there are at least that many reasons and ways to honor them on Father’s Day. Here’s a few ideas of what to do with Dad besides the standard Dad Grills for Us (or is that just my family?)
- AZ Diamondbacks game – A day at the ballpark is fun for most dads. Unfortunately the D-Backs are away on June 18, but they are home the weekend before and the weekend after. Check out their June schedule here.
- Butterfly Wonderland – On Sunday, June 18th guests are invited to celebrate Father’s Day amongst 3,000 butterflies at Butterfly Wonderland, where Fathers will receive $2.00 off admission.

Vacation Bible School – Options galore around Scottsdale all month long. In a previous post, SMB published a long list of churches around town offering a VBS program. If you missed that post, you can find it here. You can basically send your kiddos off to VBS every week for the entire month of June. I’m just saying you could. But what would you possibly do with all that time? Wink.
