My husband was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the famous Kentucky Derby. I love bringing a little bit of the Derby traditions to Arizona (not that I ever need a reason to throw a party).
You may not be from Kentucky, but you can still have a blast throwing a Kentucky Derby Party for your family and friends.
Here are a few simple ways to celebrate the day:
-
For food and drink, an authentic Derby Party features Derby Pie, Benedictine spread, sweet tea and Mint Juleps. Yum! (All the recipes can be found through the links above).
-
This year we are going to have everyone pick a horse out of a hat to cheer on during the race. The winner will get a small prize. A bottle of Kentucky bourbon or a homemade Derby pie make great Derby inspired prizes.
-
Big, colorful hats or fascinators are a must for the ladies and little girls on Derby Day. Pick up extra for the children to decorate with fake flowers and streamers.
-
Provide some sort of entertainment for your guests while you drink and wait for the race to start. I am planning on setting up a few back yard games for all the adults and kids.
Very nice!
