How to Host a Kentucky Derby Party

My husband was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the famous Kentucky Derby. I love bringing a little bit of the Derby traditions to Arizona (not that I ever need a reason to throw a party).

You may not be from Kentucky, but you can still have a blast throwing a Kentucky Derby Party for your family and friends.

Here are a few simple ways to celebrate the day:

  • For food and drink, an authentic Derby Party features Derby Pie, Benedictine spread, sweet tea and Mint Juleps. Yum! (All the recipes can be found through the links above).

  • This year we are going to have everyone pick a horse out of a hat to cheer on during the race. The winner will get a small prize. A bottle of Kentucky bourbon or a homemade Derby pie make great Derby inspired prizes.mint juleps

  • Big, colorful hats or fascinators are a must for the ladies and little girls on Derby Day. Pick up extra for the children to decorate with fake flowers and streamers.

  • Provide some sort of entertainment for your guests while you drink and wait for the race to start. I am planning on setting up a few back yard games for all the adults and kids.

If you need more ideas, check out the Official Kentucky Derby Website.

May 7th is Derby Day this year, so we still have plenty of time to plan a great Kentucky Derby party.
