Adult Improv Classes at Dearing Acting Studio

2
Thank you Dearing Acting Studio for sponsoring this post with the month of classes!

When I last wrote about Dearing Acting Studio on Scottsdale Mom’s Blog, my daughter had tried a month of acting lessons in November. Here we are in March and loves her acting classes more than ever! She has learned many valuable skills and I have watched her acting skills and confidence blossom. I am in awe of the encouraging environment the owners and coaches have created at Dearing and I am so happy that SMB lead us to this studio!

In my last post, I wrote that improv lessons were on my bucket list. Little did I know, I’d get the opportunity to take adult improv lessons for a month. When the studio owners, Leeann and Matthew Dearing, generously offered me a month of classes I was excited. Excited but also VERY nervous.

I have always loved singing and performing and have dabbled in acting but a negative experience with improv as a child kept me from pursuing it further. In that class, I left feeling intimated and vowed I’d never do it again.

I now realize that my fear of improv was attached to other fears. The fear of making a fool of myself. The fear of rejection. The fear of being imperfect. The fear of being disliked. The fear of being seen and heard. The fear of speaking my truth. Over the past few years, I’ve been chipping away at these fears and it was time for me to push through more of them by trying something out of my comfort zone.

Before my first class, I was extremely nervous AND excited. As soon as I walked into the room my nerves melted away. Everyone was kind and welcoming. I realized that this was a safe space to express myself free of judgment. John Luke, the amazing acting coach, had a way of working with each person at their level, while simultaneously coaching the class as a whole. I cannot say enough about what a spectacular acting coach he is. After each class, I felt more confident and I knew that this was an experience I’d never forget. I hope to take more classes at Dearing in the future!

I will take away many valuable lessons from these classes like the importance of being comfortable in your own shoes and being present each moment. This class helped me knock down many of the silly fears I had and create a new perception of what is possible.

I would highly recommend the classes to actors, performers, and speakers but they could really benefit everyone! I think we could all use reminders to be more present, to listen to others, to truly connect with people, to be authentic and comfortable being ourselves, and to let go of the fear of failure and imperfection and see the real and raw beauty in each moment.

Improv classes are on Wednesdays 7:00-8:30pm or Thursdays 8:00-9:30pm. Starting the first of the month is recommended. Classes for April are filling up quickly, so sign up soon if you’re interested!

Dearing Acting Studio is now offering an exciting and innovative ecourse that will walk you through everything you need to know to find success in a small market (like Phoenix). Follow this link to learn more and sign up: Actor Success in a Small Market!

  1. This is kind of right up there with the boxing gym! I’ve always thought this seemed like it could be a neat experience, great way to (totally) get out of the comfort zone, but with the excitement come a ton of nerves. After reading this it sounds much more approachable than I had pictured. Might give this a try! Thanks for sharing.

    • Yes! I felt the same way and am SO glad I tried it. It feels great to get out of your comfort zone in a safe and supportive space. 🙂
