By focusing on the positive, you will focus less on the negative, which can open up space in your life for happiness, contentment and living in the moment.
Although counting your blessings is not a new concept, the study of positive psychology is, which has gained attention lately with research about the many benefits of leading a gratitude-centered life including a more fulfilled existence.
So, how can you incorporate gratitude into your daily life? By starting a gratitude journal, a space where you jot down everything you are grateful for each day.
A few tips to get started:
- Designate a beautiful notebook specifically for gratitude journaling. I like this one, and make sure you always keep a pen next to it.
- Determine the best time of day for you to journal, and make a ritual out of it. My ritual: me in my pajamas, in bed, with my tea brewing in my namomste mug next to me. It’s the perfect way to end my day.
- At first, write down 3-5 things every day that you are grateful for to get into the habit of it. They can be bullet point style or sentences. After a few weeks, journaling should become more natural.
You’ll notice that once you make gratitude a habit, it becomes more engrained into your daily life. Finding gratitude in the daily moments of my life helps me get through the tougher moments, especially as a mama. I want to set an example to my children that happiness comes from within, and gratitude journaling is a big part of that.
You can also include your kiddos by asking them to name one thing they are grateful for at the dinner table or before they go to sleep each night.
I encourage you to start a gratitude journal and continue “thankfulness” well past the month of Thanksgiving!
