How to Be a Friend to Other Moms

to be a friend

We see each other at the grocery store, play dates, parks, church and gas stations. We are all busy. But when was the last time we were really a friend to someone?

I have a newborn and I’d love to share with you a few stories about ladies in this community that were true friends to me during my pregnancy. I was pregnant with this wonderful miracle baby, but I still struggled with anxiety. I felt guilty and sad about having those feelings, but there were a few friends that lifted me up in very special ways.

  • One of my dear friends texted me every day. Some days it was a short and sweet encouraging text. Other days it was a question about what I needed at the grocery store. Sometimes it was a funny poster or a quote. How she remembered to text me every day during my pregnancy is beyond me, but I will treasure those messages. They were the perfect pick me up and spurred me on.
  • Another friend cooked the most amazing meal I’ve ever had. She had me over to her home one evening for a time of quiet conversation. When I walked in, I felt like I was at a four star restaurant. Her dining room was decorated as if I was a celebrity. Candles were lit and a three-course meal was served. She let me sit and talk for hours. I felt relaxed, revived, and special when I left that evening.
  • A different friend made a standing date with me every week. We took turns meeting at each other’s home – piles of laundry, dust bunnies, and everything in between. I looked forward to those conversations and treasured the time of just talking it out together.
  • Another group of friends rallied around me and insisted that I have a baby shower even though it was my fourth baby. It was a beautiful day filled with cake and laughter.

Although these are very different ways of being a friend to someone, each woman left me feeling treasured and appreciated.

These ladies inspired me to take my talents and passions and really love on others. I’m not a gourmet chef, but I do love to write letters of encouragement. It has been a long time since I found three minutes and a quiet corner to mail out a card. I am going to start setting a reminder on my calendar to send letters to friends and family.

How are you a friend to other moms? What are your talents and passions?
