Solo Moments to Savor before School’s Out

schools' out Target  I’m dangerous alone in this store. Add two pint-sized beings that seem to gain control of the cart and steer to either sparkly tank tops or lego aisles and it spells even more trouble. Make no mistake,  this cart is going nowhere near the food or cleaning supplies aisles. So grab a Starbucks and slowly peruse the housewares and card aisles; you’re days of solo shopping trips are coming to an end!

LunchLunches out” will now mean adding a few kids-meals to the agenda OR at-home lunches mean cleaning-up after breakfast only to turn around and immediately make another meal.  Neither option is as appetizing as a lunch with your girlfriends.

Seeing your home picked-up/neat/orderly/clean for a 20 minute period daily You know that time right before school pickup where you have somehow summoned up the organizational skills to “pull it all together?”  It seems in summer we are in a constant prepping zone for some activity and never reach that lovely ordered state.  Swim goggles belong on the kitchen counter, Right?

Routine  School days provides a framework of bedtimes, homework, activities and basically a pretty strict schedule. Sometimes I hate it and crave some flexibility. Then comes summer and I see them staying up late, fueled by thier 4 th popsicle, starting the “ I’m bored” dialogue in June, and I think “Routine can be good!”

The Farewell & The Greeting! That joyful moment at drop-off when you take your darlings to school and the corresponding moment at pickup when you hear all about their day. Both are fabulous!

School Uniforms I am just imagining the laundry pile and outfit changes that summer will bring: before-swim outfit, headed to a friend’s house outfit, and at home outfit, pajamas….and the pile continues to grow.

The Grocery Bill Kids at home eat a HUGE amount of food, snacks, etc. I’m still unsure how they survive at school with lunch and one snack because their summertime ritual appears to be GRAZING at all hours. Add in a couple of playdates and there you are at Costco 3X week.

So yes, I will savor these things in the upcoming weeks! But I am ready for summer vacation and really spending some uninterrupted time with my kids at home…. until AUGUST!
