This week on SMB, we’re tackling the daily question “What’s for Dinner” Join us all week long as our contributors weigh-in with different ideas and recipes related to the nightly dinner -time dilemma!

Blessing a family with a meal is such a delightful and tangible way to celebrate a new baby. However, sometimes those emails pop into my inbox and a bit of dread floods me. I want to make something easy, but interesting. Re-heatable, but not a casserole. Something nourishing for the new mom, but accessible for siblings. GF? CF? DF? If you don’t have allergies in your home, it can be very daunting to prepare something for a family that does. I have lots of babies in my home and lots of allergies. I will share a couple of super easy ideas that will be safe for any family.  In my home, we have dairy and corn allergies.

Here are a few ideas.

Chili and soups are super easy. Pick something without milk or cream or bring sour cream and fixings on the side. Use rice or potatoes instead of pastas.

A protein and baked potatoes. Chicken, steak or hamburgers with potatoes or other veggies on the side. Just bring condiments on the side as some have hidden gluten or corn ingredients.

Taco salad bar. Ground beef/chicken, beans, tomato, cheese, sour cream, salsa and chips. Bring everything in separate baggies with romaine lettuce as the base. Then any allergies or dislikes can be avoided.

Some neat extras that have blessed us during new baby times are:

~Meals about a month after baby is born. Momma is still transitioning a new baby but most of the initial help and excitement from others has worn off.

~Paper plates/utensils & avoid containers that need to be returned to you

~A bottle of wine

~Desserts–Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Joe Joes for the kids and Haagen Daaz for Momma. 🙂

~Game/activity to keep other kids busy (a cheap new card game for my girls went a very long way)

~after my c-section, I had no energy to receive people or talk for long. Make drop offs very quick with promises to catch up soon after everyone is feeling more rested.

What is the best meal you have received after a baby? Do you have a go-to meal you make for new mommas?

  1. Great ideas! We always bring something really fresh and healthy for dinner and package in those foil containers, and a fruit salad and some bagels with cream cheese so they have some easy snacks or breakfast the next day too. And usually a pack of snack size treats (m&ms or some other trick or treat worthy candy)- that part might not be super healthy but I’ve never gotten any complaints! 🙂

  2. My go to meal for new mommas is a coconut curry chicken, veggies, and rice. It is very mild, very tasty, and filling. I like that it is different from the many Italian dishes that people bring.
