Sunday Brunch at True Food Kitchen: A Review & Mother’s Day Giveaway!!

The kind folks over at True Food Kitchen at Scottsdale Quarter graciously treated my family and I to brunch (my favorite meal!!! SCORE!!) so that I could share my thoughts with you, dear reader, about said brunch. How could I possibly refuse? How could I let the SMB readers down?!

I always check a restaurant out online beforehand–it’s just a foodie thing that I do.  I like to mentally prepare for what lies ahead so that I don’t make hasty, impulsive ordering decisions–a bit geeky, I know. The first thing that jumped out at me was that True Food Kitchen is a Dr. Andrew Weil concept restaurant.  My first thought, I am ashamed to admit, was, “Great.  Nuts and seeds for brunch. I need pancakes!”  But this was a fleeting thought, at best–this menu was anything but rabbit food! So, my family and I (sans teenage Zoe, who has a standing Sunday engagement at a comic book shop in Tempe) headed to Scottsdale last Sunday to give the intriguing True Food Kitchen concept a spin.drinks

My handsome husband and I are cocktail connoisseurs and the brunch cocktail menu did not disappoint.  Handsome Husband has sipped cucumber-infused cocktails from coast to coast (seriously, he ALWAYS orders a cucumber cocktail if there’s one on the menu) and the Cucumber Martini at True Food was hands-down THE BEST cucumber cocktail he has ever had the pleasure of drinking.  This is serious stuff, ladies.  I, on the other hand, have a real affinity for ginger and all things spicy. Bring on the Ginger Margarita!  Utter perfection, I tell you, with quite a kick!  All of the cocktails at True Food are made with fresh purees and juices and you can absolutely tell what a difference it makes.  These drinks were inventive and gorgeous, and dangerously delicious.

Meanwhile, Toddler Sophie was getting a little restless.  (You’d be restless, too if you saw the drinks at our table and you were woefully empty-handed!)  Our attentive server brought her a gluten-free Blueberry, Almond, Olive Oil muffin. We are not a gluten-free family, so it’s not often that I eat a gluten-free muffin.  Most GF baked goods that I’ve eaten have been mediocre, at best.  This muffin was AMAZING.  I could eat it every day for the rest of my life.  The almonds were ground into what one could assume was the flour for this muffin, giving it more of a marzipan flavor than if the almonds were just tossed into the batter. Did we eat more of this muffin than the distracted young Sophie did?  We would never!  (Yes, we would.  Her loss.  She should really pay more attention.)

The brunch menu at True Food Kitchen runs the gamut from hand-crafted elixirs and cocktails, pizzas (with a GF crust option available), sandwiches, salads, breakfasty things, and an assortment of entrees that range from a Panang Curry to a Spaghetti Squash Casserole.  Admittedly, it was hard for a couple of foodies to decide where we wanted to go with this meal!  I settled on the Huevos Rancheros (because I am always a sucker for some good Huevos Rancheros) and Handsome Husband went for the Bison Burger with sides of  sweet potato hash and kale salad.  There’s a thoughtfully curated Kid’s Menu, from which we procured an Almond Butter, Berry & Banana sandwich for little Sophie.

The Huevos Rancheros were better than average, the Bison Burger was divine and perfectly cooked, but the standouts for me were the sides:  both the kale salad and the sweet potato hash were colorful piles of superfood yumminess. You know that feeling when you eat something that is spectacularly good for you and you feel like Wonder Woman for a minute?  That’s what those sides did for me.

The service at True Food Kitchen was attentive, but not intrusive, and our server really knew her way around the menu.  Handsome Husband and I love to chat up the server to find out what they love.  Often, we are met with unenthusiastic, uninformed answers from servers that just don’t care.  Our server, refreshingly, cared a great deal. She knew the menu, knew how everything was made and knew how to direct us based on our expressed personal preferences. I can’t tell you how important this is for me (see above comment about fear of hasty, ill-informed ordering on my part…I am a little obsessed). The atmosphere is light, bright, modern and zen-like, but not in a corny, contrived way.

True Food Kitchen, you have impressed me. I will be back to order everything on the menu: Quinoa Johnny Cakes!! Edamame Dumplings!! Asparagus & Artichoke Pizza!!  Oh, and about 50 more of those Ginger Margaritas.

True Food Kitchen would love to see a bunch of happy mamas and their lovely families this Mother’s Day, May 12th! I, for one, think it’s the perfect place for Mother’s Day brunch.  (If one of you would kindly call my husband and gently nudge him in that direction, I would be so grateful!)  They do accept reservations for parties of 8 or more and you get there before 11am, there shouldn’t be a wait list yet.

MOMMY FOOTNOTE: You know when your toddler has a meltdown in a public place and you just can’t get it under control and you have to pack up and go home? Well, sadly, that happened soon after we got our entrees.  Yep, Handsome Husband had to pack up the kids while I settled up and got doggie bags.  The staff handled this quickly and kindly (thank you) and the truest test of True Food Kitchen:  our food was still spectacular after we got it home to downtown Phoenix.
