A Month of Thanks | Engaging the family in a daily time of thanks

I love that November has turned into a “month of thanks” on Facebook.  I have many friends who are participating in posting a status each day of what they are thankful for and I love reading them each day.  We have a lot to be thankful for – even if November 6th didn’t go your way, we are still truly one blessed Nation.  I have not chosen to participate in the daily Facebook thanks and it’s not because I am not thankful…I very much am; instead, I have chosen to focus our month of thanks as a family.  Last fall I came across this wonderful ‘pin’.  A thankful board – with a pocket for each day of the month.

The way it works is simple – each day we pull out the card corresponding to that day and write on it what we are thankful for.  I also add the year and the person in our family whose shared.  Each day a different person shares and it’s all recorded on the cards.  This year, we are also able look back on what we were thankful for last year.  I’m already excited for next year when we will get to look back on the last two years and see how the kids change and grow in their attitudes of thankfulness.  It has been an absolute blessing in our house.  During the early buzz of the holiday season (why does it seem start earlier and earlier?!?) we can allow our kids (and ourselves) to step back from the holiday wish lists, the “me me me” mentality, and focus on how much we already have.  Not just for one day, but for a whole month.

Want a Thankful Board for your house?  It was super easy to make thanks to the wonderful directions from Jelly Bean Junkyard.  You can read all about how to make your own here.  Now I know it’s November 14th and I probably should have blogged this for you wonderful readers in October, but it’s never too late to start being thankful – especially as a family.

What are you thankful for most this month?  What are some ways you give thanks in your family?
