Hello, third trimester.

Let’s have a proper check-in, shall we?

Weight gain: 100 pounds. Just kidding. That’s what it feels like, but in reality I’ve gained 16 so far.

Cravings: Anything high in sodium or sugar or fat — my eating habits could level a small country, it’s true.

Sleep: I’m sorry, what? I couldn’t hear you from the bathroom where I was peeing for the fifth time in five minutes. Oh, sleep? It’s all sorts of uncomfortable and I get up to pee every hour. I may be a little grumpy because of this. It’s not you, it’s me. You’re a very nice person.

Overall, this pregnancy has been kicking my butt, blah blah blah. And yet! All things are temporary, even this, and soon I’ll have another sweet babe to occupy my arms.

As I get bigger and am forced to remain sitting most of the time, I find myself thinking / plotting about having two kids. Here is a list of things I’m pretty sure will happen:

On a shopping trip, I will forget one kid in the car.

I will begin to address everyone in baby sign language and toddler language. “Look at my eyes.” “Do you understand what I’m saying to you?” “Say please, say thank you.” Signs ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ at adult stranger. Stranger is appalled.

Baby’s mouth and /or nostrils will become toddler’s new secret hiding place for very small or not-so-small objects.

Baby will also become toddler’s shiny new canvas for drawing on, finger painting on, wiping boogers on, etc.

I will never sleep again.

I suppose this is like when you find out a woman is pregnant with her first and you quietly congratulate her while thinking, with all due respect, “YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE IN FOR” because here I am, awaiting number two, already telling myself “YOU REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE IN FOR.”

So tell me, you wise mamas who have made it out alive, what was your biggest surprise when your family got a little bigger? What were you prepared for and what were you not prepared for?

Here’s to the adventure of parenting!
